CRHS Prayer Club
 President: Drew Bledsoe
Sponsor: Joe Triplett

Dear friends,
This year has started out wonderful!  Last year we averaged 12 to 15 students a meeting; this year we have already lifted our average to 40 to 50.  We hope to increase more as the year goes on! Our club is a non-member club, which means everyone is welcome! Our first project for this year is to collect money for the Christmas Outreach Project!  This will involve the Chapmanville, Man, and Logan High School Prayer Clubs!  We will be collecting from now through December 1st, if you would like to make a donation please come to school and the secretary will directed in what to do.
The Prayer Club has also joined together with some other groups in trying to have a Thanksgiving Dinner for the underprivileged in our area! Join us by making donations of dinner accessories (plates, plastic ware, cups, etc.) you can bring your items to the school; all will be greatly appreciated!

Senior Tribute

What I will miss the most about high school is my friends and teachers that I liked. I will miss the band and choir because we have grown to be family. I will love and miss everyone.

                                                                                    -Ariel Atwood
The Things I’ll miss the most are seeing my friends and my civics class. It is going to be hard leaving my best friends, but I wish them the best of luck in life. My Civics class always makes my day. I will miss how that class made me smile on a bad day. I love my friends and Coach Williamson. (The only thing I won’t miss is all the drama at this school)

                                                                                                                        -Danielle Spangler
What I’ll miss the most about high school is my friends and some of the teachers and most of all my third period civics class, because Mr. Williamson is the best teacher ever! That class will be the one class I’ll never forget! I wish all my friends the best of luck and I hope they all succeed in life.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        -Heather Lowe
I will miss seeing my friends who have became my family over these four years. Going to the football games and cheering for my school’s team. I will miss my civics class. We have so much in there. Mrs. Mahon’s class was fun; I always had a good time in there. I will miss not having all the responsibilities that came along with life. I am going to miss High School, but I can’t wait to graduate!

Chapmanville Boys Make it to States

The boys downed Sissonville Thursday night to make a trip back to states for the first time since 2001.  The Tigers won 10-1 over the Indians.  Jordan was the winning pitcher on the mound.  He gave up one earned run while giving up 6 and striking out 7.  Ellis says Jordan keeps his fast ball around 83 miles per hour, but was a little under that Thrusday night.  However, he still gave an ourstanding and strong pitching performance.  Both Tyler and Jordan had homeruns in the game giving Chapmanville a lift of energy while killing the Indians.  "They flat-out beat us," Sissonville Coach Kenny Harper said. "We knew coming in that they could pound the ball. We thought we were prepared for it, but obviously we weren't. That one inning they pounded it, what can you say? "It got out of hand and there was nothing we could do about it." Chapmanville has won only 2 state titles falling in the years of 1987 and 1997.  Ellis says he is excited to be back to be back.  The players are ready to play and hopefully they bring home another state title.  Chapmanville is scheduled to play the winner of Braxton County and Frankfort on Friday at the Power Park in Charleston.  Everyone come support and we wish them the best of luck.

2011 Chapmanville Regional High School Tennis

Chapmanville Tennis

The 2011 Chapmanville Tennis Team does not have a senior on the team. This year they have won a couple non conference and conference matches. They play a very tough schedule, Logan, Charleston catholic, Poca, they are All around good teams. Each of last 6 years we have been able to put someone in the state tournaments. We have had a solid team all 6 years. We are Right now in the process of rebuilding, lost 4 seniors last year top 4 seeds. Girls lost 2 seeds from last year so they got to step up and play in different positions. Good news is that we have been getting more people out and building Chapmanville Regional High School’s program better and I believe we can compete in state championship if everyone keeps working hard to get better.

Radiation in Tokyo

Radioactive iodine detected in the capital’s water supply spurred a warning for infants and the government issued a new estimate about the costs of rebuilding from the earthquake and tsunami that slammed into the northeast of Japan this month.  Ei Yoshida, head of water purification for the Tokyo water department, said that infants in Tokyo and surrounding areas should not drink tap water.  He said that iodine-131 had been detected in water samples at a level of 210 Becquerel’s per liter.  The recommended limit for infants is only 100 Becquerel’s per liter.
High levels of iodine that can be absorbed through the milk can accumulate in the thyroid gland and cause thyroid cancer.  High levels of cesium can damage cells and put many people at higher risk of developing other kinds of cancer.  Japan has already placed restrictions on foods, including spinach and milk that were produced in two plants near the Fukushima Daiichi plant.  Food inspectors detected iodine and cesium in the food, two of which are more dangerous radioactive byproducts that are feared to have been released from the reactors in Fukushima.
The announcement added to the growing anxiety about public safety posed by the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station.  The Health Ministry said in a statement that it was unlikely that there would be negative consequences to infants who did drink the water, but that it should be avoided if possible and not be used to make infant formula.  It was not clearly why the levels of iodine were so high and the prevailing breezes seem to be pushing radiation out to sea, said a senior western nuclear executive.

Friends of Rachel Club

The committee presidents (Taylor, Cliff, and Jeffrey) of the FOR Club at Chapmanville Regional High School presented Mrs. Karen Varney with $630.00 for the Robert L. Varney Memorial Education Fund.  The scholarship was set up at Southern West Virginia Community College in memory of Ms. Varney's son, Bobby, who recently passed away following an extended illness.  Bobby was a graduate of SWVCC and greatly enjoyed his time there.  The monetary donation was collected from the students and staff at CRHS. (CRHS website) They have also completed a toy drive at West Chapmanville Grade School, they rung bells for the Salvation Army while working at Christmas in the Park, raised money for other various scholarship funds and charities, and next year a mixer is planned between CRHS and MHS.

History of April Fools

Unlike most of the other nonfoolish holidays, the history of April Fool's Day, sometimes called All Fool's Day, is not totally clear. It is not like Halloween, where despite an interesting history, most people just put on Halloween costumes, get candy, and leave it at that. There really wasn't a "first April Fool's Day" that can be pinpointed on the calendar. Some believe it sort of evolved simultaneously in several cultures at the same time, from celebrations involving the first day of spring.
The closest point in time that can be identified as the beginning of this tradition was in 1582, in France. Prior to that year, the new year was celebrated for eight days, beginning on March 25. The celebration culminated on April 1. With the reform of the calendar under Charles IX, the Gregorian Calendar was introduced, and New Year's Day was moved to January 1.
However, communications being what they were in the days when news traveled by foot, many people did not receive the news for several years. Others, the more obstinate crowd, refused to accept the new calendar and continued to celebrate the new year on April 1. These backward folk were labeled as "fools" by the general populace. They were subject to some ridicule, and were often sent on "fools errands" or were made the butt of other practical jokes.
This harassment evolved, over time, into a tradition of prank-playing on the first day of April. The tradition eventually spread to England and Scotland in the eighteenth century. It was later introduced to the American colonies of both the English and French. April Fool's Day thus developed into an international fun fest, so to speak, with different nationalities specializing in their own brand of humor at the expense of their friends and families.

School Lunches/Nutrition

The food currently provided through the National School Lunch Program has not kept pace with what we know today to be truly healthy and nutritious food. Rather, the foods provided in the program under the guise of good nutrition. Chili cheese dogs, pepperoni pizza, cheeseburgers, and pork chops are there to prop up farm incomes and are part of the problem that has created a generation of overweight children.

Lady Tigers #1 top #3 Sissonville, 3-1 in Thursday Nights Showdown

The Lady Tigers stand strong defending their #1 spot as they beat #3 Sissonville 3-1 on a cold Thursday night.  The Lady Tigers were led by Junior Allison who was 2-4 at the plate.  Senior Samantha, Junior Jenna, Freshman Lauryn, and Sophmore Talya all had hits as well.  Jenna had an earned RBI knocking Lauryn in to make it 1-0. Then, Talya had a two run homer against Junior Dee Dee to make the score 3-0.  Sissonville scored in the 7th inning as a runner got on base by an error then stole second. Then Dee Dee knocked her in with a single.  Allison had 13 strikeouts allowing two hits and three walks. Dee Dee had 10 strikeouts allowing 6 hits and 1 walk. Chapmanville advances on the season with an undefeated record 3-0. They will be away at Logan Monday, March 27th to face #1 Triple A Logan.  Logan has beat them in the past 2 events, but hopefully Chapmanville will pull through on this one.  Good Luck Lady Tigers!

Tiger Health Center

This year, our school has added a new addition.  The Tiger Health Center has been placed downstairs for the student's and staff's medical needs.  Nicole Ellis is the provider.  The dental hygienist is Jamie Adkins, the nurse is Rebecca Adams, and the dentist is Steve Beckett.  The health center is open Monday thru Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.  The medical staff is certified and has attended replicable colleges to achieve their degrees.  Before you can officially receive and benefit from the service at the Tiger Health Center, your legal guardian is required to fill out an enrollment form.  This is so the health staff is aware of your current health records and most recent visits and so on.  After the form is filled out, your parents are notified each time by the staff on the phone that you've stopped by the center.  The Tiger Health Center was places for us to use it. So let's take full advantage of this great opportunity.

Hoops For Heart

Hoops for Heart
The American Heart Association holds an event titled Jump Rope for Heart every year in local schools, to help support good health and prevent Heart Disease. Students make donations to participate in activities usually held in the school’s gym, that include: jump roping, basketball, and few other smaller activities. The American Heart Association is known for being very generous in their support for a healthier America and in particular the prevention of Heart Disease. West Virginia is known for obesity in our youth and the unhealthiness they posses, therefore, Hoops for Heart is counteracting these major problems by encouraging physical activity and being active with allowing kids to be exempt from class to participate in this event while also providing funding to go towards the greater good.  Here at Chapmanville Regional High School, we take great pride in our youth and this event is a great example of our community’s effort to become healthier and maybe encourage our neighboring schools to do the same.

Earthquake

The Earthquake of Japan on Friday March 11th

The most powerful earthquake to hit Japan in recorded history struck off the island nation's shore on Friday, collapsing buildings, touching off widespread fires and unleashing walls of water up to 30 feet high.
The waves swept across rice fields, engulfed towns, dragged houses onto highways, and tossed cars and boats like toys. It reaching as far as about six miles inland in Miyagi, hundreds of people were dead and hundreds more missing, Japanese media reported, citing local and national police. Tens of thousands of people were displaced, according to Japan's Kyodo News agency.
Prime Minister Naoto Kan said the "enormously powerful" earthquake had caused "tremendous damage over a wide area."
The 8.9-magnitude quake prompted the U.S. National Weather Service to issue tsunami warnings for at least 50 countries and territories, although initial reports as the waves reached locations outside of Japan indicated no damage.
Japanese government officials said large tsunami waves are still a risk to coastal Japan, and urged residents in coastal areas to move to higher ground.

Chapmanville Girls face off with #1 Summers County for First Round of the Girls State Basketball Tournament

The Chapmanville Regional High School girls’ basketball team are huge underdogs in Thursday’s state tournament game. Chapmanville seeded 8th place with a 15-9 record. The odds are against them because they are matched up with #1 Summers County. All Summers County has done has been to capture the Class AA state championship for the last four years and win 93 straight games. The No. 1 seed Lady Bobcats are 25-0 heading into the state tournament. Summers County has not been beaten in a game since 2008. The Lady Bobcats have destroyed teams this year regularly by 50 points or more. Summers County has broke 100 points for 2 games on the season, 90 points on 9 games on the season, and 80 points on 6 games of the season. They were only held to 50 one game this year which was the game they won to break the record for most wins in a row in the state of WV. Summers County is 7 games away from breaking the National record held for boys/girls basketball for most wins in a row.
Chapmanville girls have no seniors while Summers County loses 4 of their 5 starters. Chapmanville is led by its trio of gaurds, Kelli Garrett and twin sisters Allison and Jenna Evans. All three  are juniors and can handle the ball well and can shoot 3 pointers acceptionally well. All three stand 5'2. Garrett averages 14.6 per game. Allison averages 10.4 per game while Jenna averages 8.5 per game. The lady Tigers are also led by post players sophmore Katelynn Hall, junior Kaylee Maynard, sophmore Talya Berry, and freshman Kristin DesRocher. Hall stands 5'7 averaging 8.1 points per game. Maynard stands 5'11 averaging 3.8 points per game. Berry stands tallest at 6'0 averaging 2.1 points per game. DesRocher stands 5'8 averaging 6.5 points per game.
Summers County is led by 6'0 senior Hallie Gunnoe averaging 22 points per game. Next comes 6'0 senior gaurd Leslie Mack averaging 21 points per game. Hallie's twin sister Hanna follows at 6'1 averaging 14 points per game followed by 5'9 junior Candice Brown. Last comes 5'10 senior post player Kelsi Lively who averages 10 points per game. A sixth player, 5'7 junior gaurd Keri Hudson comes in averaging about 7 points per game.
Chapmanville last made the state tourney in 94. This is a tough matchup for Chapmanville, but anything can happen! Congratulations on making it and we wish you the best of luck!!!!

St. Patrick's Day

St. Patrick's Day is a holiday celebrated internationally on 17th of March. It is named after Saint Patrick, the most commonly recognized of the patron saints of Ireland. It originated as a Catholic holiday and became an official feast day in the early 17th century. It has gradually become more of a secular celebration of Ireland's culture. The national color of St Patrick’s Day is green.

Rising Gas Prices

Rising Gas Prices

While there's no fighting here in West Virginia, the unrest over in Libya is hitting us in other ways, like at the gas pump."The price that we see is affected by the perception of what's going on politically, and when the political situation changes, then obviously it has a drastic impact on the oil prices, and that would be reflected in the gasoline prices," says WVU professor of petroleum engineering, Kashy Aminian. Local gas station employees say they're also seeing the hike, and are afraid their business could take a hit."People stop moving around.  People drive less.  It hurts us on the service end of it as well," says Ryan Stuart, manager of the Westover Exxon.Libya has cut production of 400,000 barrels of oil a day, contributing to the rise in price.(USA Gas Prices)  In the short term, prices are still expected to rise, but should drop over time."It is possible that the price of oil might even go higher, and you can see the impact of that in the gas pump.  But, I think if we come back and look at it next year from now, you'll see that the price has come, probably come down," adds Aminian.Stuart says gas stations do make a profit when you buy gas, but it's small.  But, when prices jump, they don't just hurt the consumer; they hit businesses just as hard."There's a profit made, but it's not what everybody thinks it is, especially right now.  Honestly, the higher the cost goes, the smaller the margin is of profit.  You know, people aren't going to buy gas.  So, you got to be right there is a competitive level," adds Stuart. Aminian says a peaceful resolution in Libya could be the ticket to gas prices coming back down."This is probably a temporary issue.  Of course, you can never predict the future, particularly when it comes to political situations.  If the situation, for example, in Libya is resolved peacefully, or some change happens in there that this problem will go away, we'll see probably a significant drop in oil price," says Aminian. Aminian adds that the United States imports about two-thirds of their supply of oil, or about 10 million barrels a day.(wdtv)

Math Field Day

                                                  MATH FIELD DAY
On February 21, 2011, the annual Math Field Day Competition was held.  This year it was held at Logan Middle School. The competition was stiff, but we had the team to win.  Chapmanville Regional High School’s Math Field Day team consisted of Sravya Pidaparthi, Nancy, Kenny, Kishan, and Nichole.  Overall, we were the team winner for county.  We also had two single representatives from Chapmanville.  Sravya won first place and Nancy is the alternate.  I spoke with Sravya and Nancy personally to see what they had to say about the experience.  Sravya said, “I practiced weeks before the competition to prepare, but considering my father is a math teacher, it came pretty natural to me.  We were tested on geometry and algebra I.  The questions were difficult but we had the mentality to win.”  I also spoke with Nancy and she had little to say.  She told us that being an alternate meant she could only compete if someone was absent from the competition.   Nancy said she was still going to practice rigorously in hopes of taking someone’s place in the event.   The regional competition will be held in Huntington on March 15, 2011.  Good luck to all the participants and especially our Chapmanville Tigers!

Chapmanville Tigers vs Poca Dots

Chapmanville Tigers vs Poca Dots

On February 24th, The Chapmanville Tigers will be playing The Poca Dots. This game is very important for the Chapmanville Tigers because it is a Cardinal Conference Game. The Tigers have been on a very good roll lately, winning 5 games straight. The Tigers record is 13-8 which is really good considering who we have played and all the injuries and outbreaks this team has had. The Poca dots are doing pretty good this year with a record of 19-3. The Tigers played the Dots @ Poca which was a very good game. We played our hearts out but we just came up short, so we expect to come out with the win this time. We would appreciate if our fans would come out and support The Chapmanville Tigers.

Round Two Sectionals

 Lady Tigers vs. Lady Skyhawks
Our girls will be playing the Lady Skyhawks tonight for their 2nd sectional game. They defeated the Tolsia Rebels this pasted Tuesday and it was a great game. Our girls are playing very well this season and hopefully will make it to states. The Pep Club needs to come out and support our girls tonight just like we did our boys last night. Good luck to our mighty Lady Tigers tonight!

Lady Tigers Match up with Lady Rebels Wednesday Night for Round 1 of Sectionals

The Lady Tigers placed 3rd in their conference while the Lady Rebels placed 2nd.  They will be facing off Wednesday night at the Field House @ 7:30.  The first round, Chapmanville came out on top winning big with a score 65-47 over Tolsia at home.  However at the Rebels home court, Chapmanville took a fall losing 57-54 in a double over time.  This game will determine who makes it to the Championship round to battle for the sectional title.  The top two teams will automatically advance to regionals.  The girls have had an outstanding season this year and will hopefully make a trip to states which has only been done once in school history.  So let's come support our girls to a victory!

Black History Month

Black History Month has been being celebrated since 1976; it is celebrated annually in the United States of America and Canada in February and the United Kingdom in the month of October. In the U.S., Black History Month is also referred to as African-American History Month. Black History Month actually started as Negro History Week in 1926 by Carter G. Woodson. The goal of Black History Week was to educate the American people about African-Americans' cultural backgrounds and reputable achievements.
This month we have a few teachers that are doing things in class with their students for Black History Month; Mrs. Varney and Ms. Mendez. I honestly think it should be celebrated in every History and English class throughout the school. The youth needs to be informed about important Africa Americans from the past.
There have been many arguments about why Black History Month is celebrated in the shortest month of the year. Also, another argument that Black History Month has become a “ready made excuse to ignore African American history for the other 11 months of the year”, thus promoting racism. It is no secret that although racism has come a long way in the past century, prejudice is still an imposing problem on American society. I hate that people are racist because everyone is equal.
Bob Marley was a great artist and very popular to the public now. Martin Luther King Jr. was a great and very famous Africa American.  There were and are many great African Americans.

Gifts for Loved Ones?

Valentine's Day is one of the most popular holidays.  Gifts and other things are given to special people on this day.  We were curious to see what the kids of our school were purchasing, so we surveyed students to see what they were getting their loved ones for Valentine's Day.

5% said a dozen roses and a bottle of wine.
60% said roses and chocolates with a card.
30% said life size stuffed animals.
5% said themselves.

Chapmanville vs Point Pleasant

On Saturday, February 5th, the Chapmanville Tigers will be traveling to Point Pleasant High School to play the Black Knights. This game will be very intense and it is a MUST WIN game because they are part of the Cardinal Conference. The Tigers record is 9-5 and the Knights record is 7-7. When Point Pleasant came to Chapmanville it was a very intense game, but the Tigers came out with win. So hopefully when we go up to Point this Saturday it will be a very good game. The Tigers are one of the hardest working teams in the Cardinal Conference.

The Super Bowl

Super Bowl
The Super Bowl is the championship game for the National Football League, pitting the top team from each of the NFL's conferences against each other. The Super Bowl is one of the biggest events in American culture -- the broadcast is almost always the most-watched program of the year, and Super Bowl Sunday has become a de facto national holiday.

The game features the winners of the AFC and NFC championship games, decided after a 16-game regular season and two rounds of playoff games. It has been played every year since 1967, started thanks to a merger between the NFL and its rival league, the American Football League.

In 2011, the Pittsburgh Steelers will take on the Green Bay Packers in Dallas. The Steelers went 12-4 in the regular season, were the No. 2 seed in the AFC and defeated the New York Jets in the AFC Championship Game. The Packers were the sixth seed in the NFC after going 10-6 in the regular season. They defeated the Chicago Bears to reach the Super Bowl. The NFL championship game will take place Feb. 6 at Cowboys Stadium.

UNC vs. DUKE

 UNC vs. Duke Rivalry

The Carolina–Duke rivalry, also referred to as the UNC–Duke rivalry, the Duke–Carolina rivalry, The Battle of Tobacco Road, or The Battle of the Blues, is a fierce rivalry, particularly in men's college basketball, between the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Duke University athletic teams. It is considered one of the most intense rivalries in all of sports: a poll conducted by ESPN in 2000 ranked the basketball rivalry as the third greatest North American sports rivalry, and Sports Illustrated on Campus named it the #1 "Hottest Rivalry" in college basketball and the #2 rivalry overall in its November 18, 2003 issue. The intensity of the rivalry is augmented by the proximity of the two universities, located only eight miles apart roughly along
U.S. Highway
15-501, and the dissimilar funding structures of the schools, as North Carolina is a public university and Duke is a private university. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is the flagship school of the multi-university UNC system and consistently ranked in the top 30 national universities by U.S. News and World Report. Duke University is located in Durham, North Carolina, and is consistently ranked in the top 10 national universities.

2011 AFC Championship Game and 2011 NFC

Championship Game on Sunday

The 2011 NFC Championship Game as well as the 2011 AFC Championship Game will be held on Sunday. Both games have one team that has already qualified after two very interesting games on Saturday. In the Pittsburgh vs. Baltimore game, it came down to the final minutes. However, the Pittsburgh Steelers won 31-24 to advance to the 2011 AFC Championship Game. The nightcap had Green Bay vs. Atlanta, with the Green Bay Packers winning in impressive fashion to advance to the 2011 NFC Championship Game.

The opponents for Green Bay and
Pittsburgh will be decided on Sunday when the other two divisional playoff games take place. It could be a very interesting pair of games, especially with what has been developing over in the NFC. The Atlanta Falcons were the No. 1 seed in the playoffs. Knocking them off means that the 2011 NFC Championship Game is going to either be played in Chicago or Seattle next week. If the Seattle Seahawks beat the Chicago Bears in the early Sunday game, Seattle will play host to the NFC Championship Game.

In the AFC right now, the
New England Patriots are the top seeded team, making them the favorites to beat the New York Jets on Sunday. It's going to be a tough game in some very cold weather, but it could end up being a great game. If you ask any of the Jets this week, they feel that it is going to be a blow-out in favor of the road team. Their trash talking eventually led to the NFL commissioner making a statement about toning things down. He wasn't wrong, but it's hard to fault the Jets too much for feeling so bad about getting crushed by the Patriots in their regular season match-up a few weeks ago.

If New England beat the Jets, they will host the 2011 AFC Championship Game. If the Jets win, it will be the Pittsburgh Steelers that get to serve as the hosts. Either match-up sounds pretty good, and it could be a really exciting ending to the AFC season. Maybe the most interesting scenario would be a Seattle vs. Pittsburgh Super Bowl, giving Seattle a re-match against the team that was helped by officials to beat them in the Super Bowl five years ago. Having the storylines of Ben Roethlisberger against Matt Hasselbeck again would certainly give NFL analysts a lot to talk about wouldn't it?
